Cross Country Skiing
Avoid the lift lines and use your cross-country skis to explore the snow-covered Wyoming wilderness. With 11 cross-country ski areas, advanced skiers and novices alike can access trails all over the state, taking them from resorts to remote areas for prime wildlife viewing. Long stretches of open area are also well suited for the athletic skier looking to put on some speed.
Wyoming’s mountain ski resorts are the perfect place to start. Jackson Hole Mountain Resort’s Nordic Center has more than 10 miles of professional groomed track. Head off on your own or take a lesson with one of the resort’s PSIA-certified instructors.Grand Targhee Resort also offers cross-country instruction in Rick’s Basin, one of the most beautiful Nordic ski areas in the country.
You can also boot up in Wyoming’s national parks. Cross-country skiing is allowed on all unplowed roads and trails in Yellowstone National Park, and there are several ski trails in the Mammoth, Tower, Old Faithful, Northeast and Canyon areas of the park. Popular cross-country areas in Grand Teton National Park include Moose-Wilson Road, Taggart Lake and the Teton Park Road, the Signal Mountain Area, Colter Bay and Flagg Ranch.
It may be the most mountainous, but the northwest portion of the state isn’t the only place for your skinny skis. The Bighorn, Medicine Bow-Routt and Black Hills National Forests also offer cross-country
