Live the Legend at Legend of Rawhide
When people ask us where to experience Wyoming authentically as a local would, nine times out of 10 our reply is simple: attend an event in one of our smaller communities. Experiencing the life in one of Wyoming's nostalgic local towns invites you to see the simple, hardworking, Western flare that makes Wyomingites who they are. And after all, part of what makes our state such a wonderful place to visit is the very people that respect, care and live on our land.
A rustic wagon in Lusk sets the scene for a story to be told about the area's past.
Plus, you'll get a no-frills taste of what this state is really about. Take Legend of Rawhide in Lusk, Wyoming for example. Small town people with a whole lot of personality. This annual celebration invites locals and passerby's to let loose and remember the days of old in Wyoming and it's Native American past. This long-standing tradition of over 50 years gives a rare glimpse into the area's history through pageants, dances, parades, and other live performances detailing the legend and lore of Wyoming.
Authentic cowboys and western locals paint the streets during the Legend of Rawhide's parade, scheduled for this Saturday, July 11th at 4:30 p.m.
The motto of this unique event is simply to promote community spirit and goodwill, all while having a great time. And we're certain you'll get a taste of just that. The spine of the event is based on stories that have been passed down from generation to generation, kept alive through the performance of the original script, which promises to wow audiences, both young and old, while offering a "slice of Lusk's Western heritage". This year, folks can look forward to two-days full of festivities all throughout the weekend beginning on Friday, July 10th into Saturday night, July 11th. The Legend kicks off the weekend with a poker ride at 10:00am on Friday, and later on that evening, a flag ceremony at 8:15 p.m. , performance at 8:30 p.m. and a dance and honkytonk voodoo open to the public.
If you're able to pull away from the event's exciting activities, plan to take in Lusk's expansive prairie-like setting and unique surroundings.
Saturday will offer a free cajun boil at the Niobrara Fairgrounds from 11:30a.m. to 1:30 p.m, followed by a silent auction (from 11:00a.m. to 7:00p.m.) and a ranch feed/team driving from 1:30 - 4:00p.m. Plan to stick around for the parade at 4:30 p.m. and performances late into the evening. No plans yet this weekend? Come join the Legend and witness the lasting legacy of Wyoming's past and a tribute to its heritage.
