Experience the West at the Sheridan WYO Rodeo
If you've ever had a fascination with the West, a love affair with the American cowboy, or just an appreciation for a simpler time where hard work and authenticity reigned supreme, we encourage you to see these ideals lived out at one of Wyoming's famed rodeos. And not just any rodeo, mind you. The Sheridan WYO Rodeo. Experience the thrill of Wyoming's Western spirit firsthand the week of July 6th through the 12th and witness historic Sheridan in all of its glory. The 85th WYO rodeo will light up the town with full-throttle rodeo action and a wide array of exciting events for the whole family that you don't want to miss. This week-long celebration extends an open invitation to come and experience the tradition of the West through an abundance of memorable activities and entertainment. The "WYO" kicks off with several events beginning Monday, July 6th, including the Craft Brother's 20th Anniversary Wild & Woolly Show at the Wyo Theater. And on Wednesday, July 8th, don't miss the captivating cultural performance of the Native American Pow Wow at the Historic Sheridan Inn.
The Native American Pow Wow paints the lawn of the Historic Sheridan Inn with cultural vibrance and tradition.
Excitement continues throughout the week with numerous fun family-friendly activities including art shows, the 'Boot Kick-Off', shows at the WYO Theater, a parade, carnival, street dances and polo events. The rodeo action begins July 8th and runs through the 11th. But don't go expecting just a "standard" rodeo. The WYO brings much more to the table. The Sheridan Rodeo is unique from all other Wyoming rodeos in that this event not only showcases the top professional cowboys and cowgirls, but also the World Champion Indian Relay Races (a must-see!) and the Kid's Wild Pony Race.
The Indian Relay Races unleash the spirit of excitement, making it a popular favorite among spectators.
"The Indian Relay Races have been a staple at the WYO for 21 years provides fans [with] an action-packed experience they won't forget," said Zane Garstad, President of the Sheridan WYO Rodeo Board. "The Kid's Wild Pony Races were added last year and became the talk of the town--instantly becoming a crowd favorite." When asked what the favorite event is during the week-long Sheridan WYO Rodeo, Jeff Wells, a member of the Sheridan WYO Board of Directors replied, "the entire week." "The town becomes so vibrant and lively. You feel all the excitement from the many events and homecomings. The city is so alive with social engagements," said Wells.
Crowds flock to the streets of downtown Sheridan to witness the Sheridan WYO rodeo parade, complete with decorated floats, music, and more.
Not a Wyoming native, or even a western local? No problem. "Sheridan embraces newcomers and natives alike and provides the opportunity to enjoy the occasion and become a little "cowboy" for a week," said Wells. The town of Sheridan provides an authentic and ideal setting for this event with its friendly locals, Western flare, and an unlimited amount of things to see to do. "People won't find a more beautiful and hospitable area than Sheridan," said Garstad. "The area is small enough to provide that small-town 'feel', while operating in a modern-day environment. Sheridan has also received multiple awards and recognition including voted #1 Best Western Town by True West Magazine." With so much to experience at this event, the best advice we can give is this: plan to stay awhile. "I would encourage families to stay with us the entire week with all the events and sites to see in [Sheridan]", said Garstad. " Sheridan is a beautiful town with a great downtown to capture the attention of all family members. " And, with close proximity to the majestic Bighorn Mountain Range, you'll want to spend at least a day or two hiking, biking, backpacking, fishing, and exploring the local beauty.
While it may be hard to pull away from all the rodeo action, make a point to spend some time in Sheridan's beautiful backyard.
"Sheridan provides a unique experience that appeals to many different interests and that weaves our scenic beauty with western culture, and history and hospitality into our quaint yet vibrant community," said Wells.
